We have seen a dramatic increase in holographic displays in recent times with some commercially aimed ones being able to have objects reach out from the screen without the use of any sort of 3d glasses etc. But one thing has not changed since the days of cheap 3d cinema with red and blue glasses, once you reach out to touch what seems to be there the illusion disappears.

Thanks to the research at University of Tokyo this might change soon since they just presented their new concept of "Touchable Holography". Making use of a “Airborne Ultrasound Tactile Display” that emits ultrasonic waves for the touch sensation, a concaved mirror for the 3d image and funny enough some Wii Remotes responsible for tracking the users movement, they have created a projector that creates touchable imagery like a floating ball, little animals walking or raindrops falling on your hand.

Now it's time for the entertainment industries to make use of this technology and I'm sure you already have some ideas too.
