Japanese high school girls typically wear their uniforms in a miniskirt style. The rules at many schools prohibit them, so they fold over their knee-length school uniform skirts at the waist several times (rather than tailoring them to make them shorter) to alter them into miniskirts. When there’s a sudden uniform inspection at school, the girls put the folded over part back down to where it originally was so that the teacher will approve them.

But lately something unusual has been going on with high school girls' miniskirts. According to the Asahi Shimbun, there is a long skirt boom in Nara Prefecture in western Japan, with skirts reaching below the knees. The trend is changing, according to high school girls in the prefecture who say that "bare legs and miniskirts aren't fashionable” and “long skirts are cuter.”
