Lost in Akihabara ?

The Best Shops Of Akihabara

Recently more stores in Akihabara recognize it's value as a tourist spot and try to cater accordingly. We can see free english maps distributed at the station, even though with a shop density like Akiba it will take some more tries until the result will be really useful. Also there have been english info stands and more stores advertising with english speaking staff.

For that reason when I received a copy of the english  guide book "The Best Shops Of Akihabara" I figured it would be a pamphlet, printed with funding from local stores adverts. When flipping through the pages It turns out I was wrong as the layout looks more like a colored high school newspaper with big printings and original characters introducing various Akiba spots, organized by type.

Soon it was clear that there was no advertising at all, not even a publisher was stated. This work is actually done in total DIY fashion by a dedicated group of japanese who speak english and decided to put out a book helping foreigners on short trips to make the most out of their stay.

The included map only shows the sites and shops mentioned in the book but that might be a good fact when taking into account the incredible amount of buildings that stack up to 4 and more shops, leaving tourists confused which one to go to.

The english is not perfect but far from incomprehensible "Engrish", actually adding a cute touch to the nicely worked out concept, which seems to base on the same passion as the various doujinshi (independent comics) that can be found in Akihabara.

While certainly not a complete database, this book could prove very useful for people who want to explore Akiba by themselves and visit some of the best places in a short time.

With a price tag of 20$ one might find it a bit expensive but the incredible research work, as well as the printing cost all financed by a small independent group has to be taken into account. Apparently over 200 tourist were asked about their favorite shops and what troubled them most when coming to Akiba for the first time.

The local government might do well supporting  passionate projects like these to make them more accessible to the casual tourist. It might be good for the worldwide image of Otaku's "Holy Land".

The book can be ordered at the link below.

UPDATE: The book will be available for a "special opening price" of 10$.
