Case Modding: Sega Saturn

posted 08/10/14

On October 8 Tskumo Case Kingdom had a rare treat on display for fans of custom PC casing as well as video games. Saturn, the ill fated console released by Sega in 1994 still has many dedicated fans despite it's limited success. Now a skilled staff member of the shop built a custom PC with high spec parts like an Intel Atom Dual Core processor as well as a Slim Combo Drive made by Toshiba all fitted nicely into the once 32-Bit machine. The slot for the consoles memory expansion was redesigned and fitted with a usb memory device (2GB). The internal hard drive holds 160 Gigabyte.

The remodeling did not stop with the casing. The Saturn's optional mouse also got an upgrade and is now boasting optical mouse technology by japanese maker buffalo.

When asked about the reason for the production the staff member replied: "It happened that when my brother was about to get a new PC that my Saturn broke down. So we first joked about it and then went for the real thing." He said that it was merely for fun and if given the chance he would do another case modding. Apparently from the start there were no plans to use the internal fan as the heat generated by the Atom Dual Core requires much stronger cooling.

Apart from the time investment and the price of a used Saturn the cost is rather cheap with an estimated 50.000¥ for all other parts used.

Now the downside is that it's not for sale.
