10th Anniversary of Japanese Maid Cafes
posted 08/09/08
Commemorating the birth of the Japanese Maid Cafe ten years ago R's Publishing released a book where 4 freelance editors and writers named Kiyoshi Hayakawa, Naohiro Kimata, Yamasaki Ryu and Sato Kaede elaborate on various topics regarding the background of a phenomenon that has been on the rise ever since: Maid Cafes. Not only does it talk about the historical side when time limited event "Pia Carrot" due to incredible fan reception turned into the first proper maid cafe "Cure Maid" - still serving customers daily - but it goes into very detailed aspects like the proper manors customers should observe as well well as standard rules.
Maid Cafes live from the character of their staff so it's no surprise maids - comparable to street idols - communicate with fans through a personal blog. Like the popular "Maid Cafe Pinafore" whose staff are in high demand amongst fans with it's own figure collection or canned food line.
Maid staff Himeno Kurara (Pinafore) and Arisu (Mailish) give a lengthy interview in this book, allowing people to hear first hand what it's like to work as maid staff in Akihabara. Also popular Akiba Idol Sakuragawa Himeko speaks about life in the Otaku world.
The book is 176 pages thick and priced at 1365¥.
