Big Cleaning Event in Akihabara

posted 08/07/10

Akihabara is apparently gaining more and more popularity every year and when the weather is nice it is usually flocking with tourists even on a weekday. The result is that the once clean streets where a strict no smoking rule is enforced (which unfortunately many foreigners don't know about) have become messy and littered with empty bento boxes, plastic wrappings, etc.

The popular local governor and Akihabara born Takaya Kobayashi already realized this developement in 2002 and decided to do something about it and so created the event  "osouji shi tai" where everybody interested in keeping Akihabara a nice and clean place again can join the group of voluntary staff to help out clean up the city before the upcoming summer holidays. The event has been a big success with many local cosplayers showing up delivering proof of just how much they love their homeground.

Mr. Kobayashi said that this will be the first big outdoor event since the horrible stabbing incident about one month ago as there hasn't been a "walkers paradise" (streets closed for pedestrians) after the bloody crime. He hopes that the event will help bring people together that care about Akihabara and help bring an overall positive influence on the regulars as well as tourists.

The event will be held on on July 13th with equipment being passed out at 13.00 and the cleaning starting at 14.00. The cleaning that usually brings on about 150 people will last for about 2 hours.
